2021 CopperDog25 Race Results

The CopperDog25 featured a wonderful field of 19 mushers and their six dog teams. The teams were slowed by the sugar snow on the trail, but the weather was cooperative and made for a great race. Congratulations to the winner Ben Thompson who just edged out Morgan Larson by 15 seconds.

It was a family affair with Sara and Anna Anderson (wife and daughter of JR Anderson, this years winner of the CD150), the father and son teams of Steve and Casey Goedken, and the sisters Kiana and Kelsey Beaber.

2021 CD25 Race

Since its humble beginnings a decade back, the CopperDog 150 has grown from a simple idea to a world-class mushing event that brings joy to the hearts of many. Thank you for sharing you love of mushing with us and inspiring everyone who loves CopperDog.

Due to the Covid19 pandemic this year's races will be slightly different to protect the community, the mushers, and the sled dogs. In consultation with health professionals, other races, it was decided to avoid the Calumet start this year to avoid large crowds and to minimize the number of road crossings.

She watched the end of the UP200 in 1991 and was hooked on the sport ever since. Since then, she has competed in numerous sprint, dryland, and mid-distance races. Her kennel name is Yoop It Up Kennel with 10 dogs - mainly Alaskan Huskies.

Linda would like to send out a big thank you to all the volunteers who help with this race and a big, big thank you to her husband, Chris, who supports her.

Linda Lange
Last Chance Kennel
Baldwin, MI 49304

Linda is joining us for her first CopperDog from Last Chance Kennel in Baldwin, MI! She's entered the 6-dog race a few times but hasn't ended up at the start line! But this year, she'll do it! Her lead dogs are Agate and Zoom.

Linda has been racing with sled dogs since 1991. She started out ski-joring, then went on to sprint racing, then mid-distance racing, all in Michigan. Along with her husband, Rick, they have hosted races with the Michigan Dog Drivers Association (MiDD), Mid-Union Sled Haulers, and Great Lakes Sled Dog Association on the Sweetwater Non-Motorized Winter Sports trails in the Baldwin area. MiDD worked with the Forest Service and local Road Commission to implement the trail system on federal, county, and private lands.

Linda spent her first few years of life in Mohawk and Laurium, staying with her grandparents during the week while her dad attended Michigan Tech and her mom worked at Mullen's Dry Cleaners in Calumet. She also spent a lot of vacation time during her childhood at Lac La Belle.

She would like to thank her sponsor Elizabeth Kauffman, DVM at Irons Animal Hospital in Irons, MI.

Good luck in the CD25, Linda!

Suzie Harris
Mushing Club at Michigan Tech
Houghton, MI 49931

Suzie is a rookie musher this year! She is a fourth year mechanical engineering student at Michigan Technological University and she is racing dogs from Tom and Sally Bauer's kennel. Her lead dogs are Betty Boop and Hyrule.

Suzie would like to say thanks to the Bauer family, owners of the Otter River Sled Dog Training Center and Wilderness Adventures, for supporting the Mushing Club at Michigan Tech and allowing her to run and train their dogs!

Her crazy training story was when she was teaching a new member of the Mushing Club at Michigan Tech how to run a sled for the first time. She took them for a couple laps around the trail, then they switched and she rode in the sled while some one else mushed.

The leaders did not listen to them at one of the intersections at first, so they put down the snow hook and went to pull the team the correct way. The leaders ended up going the right way on their own, so the club member hopped back on the sled... or so they thought... going pretty fast, Suzie looked behind
her and there was no musher!!!

Suzie, riding in the sled, pulled the snow hook up to her and was able to stop the team from inside the basket!!! Once everything was in order they laughed pretty hard and made sure to hang on a little tighter for the rest of the run.

Good luck in the race, Suzie!

His crazy mushing story goes something like this; at a race in Québec, he was dragging behind his sled holding onto the brake trying to hang onto his team; first his wind pants were down around his ankles... then his long underwear... then... his underwear!! Thankfully for Randy, no one was around!

He was finally able to pull himself back up to standing and somehow managed to get dressed again while maintaining control of his team!!

Randy would like to thank his wife and handler, Cris.

Richie Camden is back for his second CopperDog from Hillsboro, MO! His kennel is named Breakaway Siberians, and his leaders are Teemu and Juneau.

He initially got into mushing when he bought a Siberian Husky in 2008 from a breeder in Northern Wisconsin. He had no intention of even getting into mushing! The very first time he went to a sled dog race it was a 90-mile race that he entered which was his first attempt at mushing.

All of his dogs are adopted from rescue groups around the Midwest. They have become very popular and even had a few photo shoots with the Stanley Cup!

Richie would like to thank his sponsors; Alpine Outfitters and Diamond Naturals.

Glad to have you back and good luck!

A funny mushing story from Becky: during a snow storm they were out running and Lil Glady perked her ears up and started blasting down the trail, she jumped into the snowbank and almost brought home a fat partridge for dinner! All you could see were her coal-black eyes looking back amidst the whiteout conditions!

Becky would like to give huge thanks to her husband, Geoff, and their kids for tolerating her crazy winter passion. Huge thanks to her parents as well for giving her a great childhood. Becky said she is very blessed to have them both supporting her endeavors throughout the years.

Eventide was chosen for her kennel name as they are always on the trail either before sunrise or after sunset. But they didn’t choose a name until she was certain this was what she wanted to use!

Melinda's crazy mushing story happened one night taking off on a training run. She left with their headlamps and gloves resting on a parking lot sign. They ran six miles in the dark before they could loop back to the truck. The dogs did great; she said it was like a trust fall with sled dogs!

Good luck at your first CopperDog, Melinda!
